then if you make a mistake or 2 they may mess up your small edge.

I was for a very vert short while years and years ago.

Learning the card counting is the easy part. Just like learning chess. The harder part is learning how to play and keep the casino from asking you to leave.

Secondly, most casinos are using 6+ deck shoes and cut the deck so thick, you're opportunities are fewer and farther in-between.

Comps/promotions and progressives certainly play into the house edge. when you are getting certain juicy promotions combined with a good progressive it can definitely be a plus EV situation

The way I heard Fishhead explain it is that it's a -EV game until you hit a Royal Flush and only then will you be +EV. That takes a lot of playing, even with favorable slots if you know how to find them.
