They signed a waiver and knew about the risks. Isnt the submarine makeshift ? I read its driven by an Xbox controller and has old pipes.

Part of me doesn't feel sorry for them. You buy the ticket and take the ride.

Another part of me gets claustrophobic just thinking about it

Imagine it's nearly 12,500 feet below down. To make a trip down to that part of the ocean is a really huge risk. tsk tsk.

The passengers are actually bolted in from the outside

So they have to find the vessel first, then find a way to get it to the surface, then get the thing unbolted to get them out

Buried alive at the bottom of the ocean how terrifying

I wonder what really went wrong on that submarine. This is like the version of MH370 that went missing, but only in the air.
If you watch that video I posted above it talks about some of the things they used to control it are cheap stuff you can buy over the counter in stores

Of course you would think they would have backups to those items and I'm not saying that's what went wrong but it's a possibility

What's it like inside?

The sub itself is extremely narrow, measuring just 670 cm x 280 cm x 250 cm (22ft x 9.2ft x 8.3ft), and can carry a crew of just five people - a pilot and four passengers.

While it is bigger than competitors, passengers are required to sit on the floor with limited room to move around.
At the front of the vessel is a large domed porthole offering a viewing point, which the company claims is the "largest viewport of any deep-sea manned submersible".
The walls of the sub are also heated as conditions can become extremely cold at such depths. Wall mounted lamps are the only source of light on board.
Unusually though, it includes a private toilet for customers at the front of the sub. A small curtain is pulled across when it is in use and the pilot turns up some onboard music.
However, the company's website does recommend "you restrict your diet before and during the dive to reduce the likelihood that you will need to use the facilities".
